Abstract
The nitroblue tetrazolium(NBT) test was evaluated in 50 adult onset diabetic patients. In addition, 15 healthy adults were served as normal control subjects, The diabetic patients were grouped into 47 patients without bacterial infection and 3 patients with bacterial infection. And the 47 non- infected patients were gouped into the two groups according to the fasting blood glucose levels, 38 . Patients below 200mg/100ml and 9 patients above 200ing/100m1, and again, into the¢¥ two groups` according to- the duration of the illness, 7 patients who have suffered from diabetes for 5 years or more and 40 patients? less than 5 years. And results of the NBT test ineach group were compared.
The NBT scoreand NBT positivee neutrophil counts in the diabetic patients were significantly higher than those in the normal control group. But there. were no significant differences in NBT score and; NBT positive neutrophil counts between the two? groups divided according to the fasitng^blood glucose levels in the diabetics, and also no significantdifferences in the results of the NBT test between_ the two groups divided according to the duration of the illness of diabetes;
The above results suggest that the NBT reductioncapacity of the neutrophil in the peripheral blood of the adult onset diabetic patientis not disturbed atad that the metabolic pathways or enzyme syste-msinvolved in the NBT reduction of neutrophils are not disturbed in the diabetics. And these indicate that the NBT reduction capacity of theneutrophill in the diabetic patient is not affected by the blood glucose levels or by the duration of the illness.
